Can I wall mount my TV myself? Yes you can however there are a number of things to consider. Are you the handy type? Do you have the right tools? Do you have the time!
Tools you will need:
- stud finder to identify the vertical studs in the wall as well as the horizontal noggins.
- power identification device (built into some stud finders) to ID power
- drill or impact driver to screw the mounting screws into the wall for the bracket.
- spirit level to check the bracket/TV is straight on wall.
- snake to run up inside the wall to draw the cables down for cable hiding
- plaster cutter to cut holes for cable hiding
- screwdrivers
Things to consider:
- How high to mount TV (a common mistake is mounting the TV too high for a seated viewing position).
- Wall construction. Is it a timber or steel frame house? Steel frame houses require fasteners with thread all the way up to the head of the screw. If its brick then you will need a masonry type Hammer or SDS drill and cable hiding may need to be done externally in ducting or the wall may need to be chased out to conceal cabling.
- Are there other services inside the wall eg electrical plumbing etc or a retractable sliding door? Always check the other side of the wall to see what services might be present inside wall.
- Alway turn power off to the house before drilling or cutting into the wall
Bracket selection. There are 3 types of brackets, Full Motion which swings out and around, tilting which is flat to the wall but you can tilt TV angle up/down (usually 5 Degrees), flat fixed type. Which ever type of bracket you choose be prepared for the mounting scews and spacers supplied with the bracket NOT to fit your TV! This is very common and you may need to get some different longer/shorter screws spacers etc....
